If you're confused about weight-loss programs, you're not alone. At any given moment, popular weight-loss diets run the gamut from low fat - high carb to high fat - low carb. Some emphasize high protein. Others require precise combinations of nutrients in each meal. The common misconceptions about nutrition started more than sixty years ago when studies compared the health of peoples in different countries. They found that where there was low fat intake, people enjoyed better health. The conclusion then was that all fats are bad and we should eat more carbohydrates instead. We now know that this is not the case. The study did not take into account that there were other dietary differences such as the consumption of certain types of carbohydrates. There are good fats, and bad fats. There are good carbs, and bad carbs. (Proteins too!) So what have we learned since those days? A lot. First, the importance of dietary fiber was unknown at the time of those studies. More recent studies have shown that for people who eat high-fiber carbs, consuming fats is not a problem. Back in the late 1970's a doctor at the University of Toronto pioneered the glycemic index. This is a scale which measures your blood sugar (glucose) after eating a particular food. The faster the glucose increases the more the food contributes to weight gain. Surprisingly, it was found that certain starches such as white potatoes and white bread increase blood sugar levels faster than table sugar does! It turns out our low fat, high carb diets are basically high sugar intake diets! And it is the common acceptance of the "cut-the-fat to lose the fat" thinking that has caused the fattening of North America. National guidelines that were fashioned to make us slim and healthy actually made us fatter and sicker. For fast, lasting weight loss, choose a diet that teaches you to choose the right fats and the right carbs. Learn about which foods taste good, satisfy your appetite, and don't make you feel empty a few hours later. The best diets provide fast results, and teach us how to make them lasting results. The diets most effective at achieving this are the ones which are based on the glycemic index concept, show us when to eat, what to eat, and how to avoid the pitfalls.
