In recent years, a weight control diet known as the Zone has captured the imagination of the American people. Still, despite the publicity surrounding this revolutionary diet, you may still be wondering how it works, and if it will help you shed those unwanted pounds. The Zone is based on something known as the ZonePerfect Food Pyramid. In this pyramid, carbohydrates make up about 40 percent of one's daily diet, down from the usual 65 to 70 percent. Protein is increased in order to aid your development of lean body mass. And the fat content of your diet is scaled back to 30 percent. As a result, the Zone is classified as a low-fat diet by such organizations as the American Heart Association. In other words, the Zone weight control diet can be referred to as being carb moderate, protein adequate, and low fat. While you might imagine that the Zone is a high protein diet, that is simply not the case. This is because, if you're working within the Zone, you will never eat more protein than carbs. Water is the basis of the Zone FoodPyramid. Dieters are encouraged to drink eight, eight-ounce glasses of water each day. Fruits and vegetables come next, followed by low fat protein sources. Pasta, grains, starches, and breads are on the top of the pyramid. In the zone, carbs are divided into two classifications: favorable and unfavorable. Favorable carbs do not have much of a sugar content and thus are slowly absorbed. Examples of favorable carbs include the majority of fruits and vegetables, such as apples, pears, and broccoli. In sharp contrast, unfavorable carbs are high in sugar and are absorbed fairly quickly. As a result, the body releases a significant amount of insulin. Cereals, pasta, bananas, and carrots are some examples of unfavorable carbs. These should be avoided at all costs in an effort to reduce the body's production of fat. Proteins you should consider eating include meat, pork, egg whites, chicken, cheese and fish. In addition, you might consider consuming the plant protein known as soy. With the Zone diet, you don't have to worry about eating fat, since it does not stimulate insulin secretion.
