A healthy diet is an important first step toward excellent health. In addition to helping to improve your energy level and stamina, a healthy diet can also help you to control your weight. This is especially important, since obesity can lead to a number of diseases, including type 2 diabetes, gall bladder problems, and even cancer. How do you determine if you're overweight? The quick way to do it is to find out your body mass index, or BMI. If a woman has a BMI of 25 to 29.9 she is labeled as overweight; if the BMI is 30 or more, she is obese. Your family doctor should be able to figure out your BMI. If you find out that your BMI is higher than it should be, you can take the necessary steps to make your diet healthier. Maintaining a healthy diet is not easy. Part of the reason for this is that unhealthy foods are often quicker and easier to prepare. It takes time to purchase the ingredients necessary for a healthy meal and to prepare it. However, with some advanced planning, you can learn to cook meals that are not only healthy, but also delicious. To determine the building blocks of a healthy diet, study the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005, which is available on the World Wide Web. These guidelines have been established by the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services. The guidelines recommend eating two cups of fruit each day, along with green vegetables such as broccoli and Romaine lettuce; orange vegetables such as carrots and sweet potatoes; and beans. You should also have a healthy dose of calcium each day. This can come from low-fat or fat-free milk, cheese, or yogurt. You should also eat at least three ounces of whole-grain cereals, breads, or pasta daily. While you should also have a fair amount of protein, it's important that you choose the lean variety. Also, it's best if lean meat is prepared by baking, broiling, or grilling. It is also important to get into the habit of reading the labels on food. You should focus on foods that have low amounts of saturated fats and trans fats. In addition, limit your intake of salt and sugar in order to remain healthy. Copyright © 2005 - 2006 |
