A study by the Medical College of Wisconsin and the VA Medical Center in Milwaukee found that the average person burns 705 to 865 calories using a treadmill over a period of an hour. In contrast, a stair machine burned no more than 746 calories; a rowing machine, 739; a stationary bicycle, 604; and a cross-country ski machine, 678. Research conducted by the American Medical Association also found that the treadmill is the top cardiovascular machine in terms of amount of calories burned. Another important piece of fitness equipment is the weight machine. Strength training has been proven to enhance muscle size and tone, improve muscle strength, and enhance the strength of tendons and bones. Through effective strength training, you can shed fat and add muscle, improving your overall appearance. Ordinarily, without strength training, an individual will lose one-half pound of muscle each year after age 25. This will also create a one-half percent drop in one's basal metabolic rate each year, resulting in an increase in body fat. In fact, one of the most critical errors that most people make when trying to control their weight is to refuse to take part in strength training. If you decrease calories without exercise, you can lose not only fat, but muscle as well. Whether you use fitness equipment at a gym or at home, you should make sure that a professional trainer walks you through the process before you begin.
