In general, there are two main reasons that individuals find they need diet information. Either they are determined to lose weight or they want to enhance their overall health. If you are generally in good health and you are not overweight, your best bet is to follow the food pyramid guidelines offered by the Department of Agriculture. However, if you find that your weight has gotten out of control, a low carbohydrate diet may be best for you. Over the years, a number of different low-carb diets have emerged. For instance, there's Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution and the Carbohydrate Addict's Lifestyle Plan. In general, low carb diets not only involve a reduction in carbohydrate consumption, but also an increase in protein intake. For the most part, individuals on a low carb diet should consume at least 60 to 70 percent of their daily calories from fat. In contrast, carbohydrates should compose less than 10 percent of one's overall calorie intake. Here's another piece of important diet information: You don't have to go hungry on a low carb diet. You can eat until you're satiated, provided that you only eat those foods that are permitted. Permitted foods include meat, fish, poultry, eggs, cheese, and a few green vegetables. You should sharply restrict consumption of foods such as brown rice, potatoes, peas, and corn. In addition, you should completely eliminate sugary foods such as fruit juices, donuts, candy, and anything that is made with white flour. You might be wondering how a low carb diet works. As you limit your consumption of carbohydrates, the level of insulin in your body will drop and the amount of glucagon will rise. Glucagon aids the burning of fat and enables cholesterol to be taken out of deposits in the arteries. When you reduce your carb intake, your body burns fat, blood sugar is maintained, insulin levels decrease, and you lose weight. If you reduce your carbohydrate intake to less than 30 grams a day, you should be able to shed pounds. Your body, in essence, develops a state known as ketosis which can lead to quick weight loss. Of course, it is important to check with your physician before beginning any serious weight loss program.
