A diagnosis of diabetes can be devastating. However, the good news is that, with medication and proper diet, you should be able to keep your diabetes under control. Contrary to popular belief, there is no single diabetic diet. Rather, the American Dietetic Association recommends that diabetes patients comply with the recommendations found in the Food Pyramid. Another worthwhile idea is to be careful of one's carbohydrate intake. In addition, diabetics need to make sure they have regular meals in order to maintain their blood sugar levels. In general, the diabetic diet involves focusing on eating additional starches. This means consuming as many as a half-dozen servings each day of bread, cereal, and starchy vegetables. One helpful hint is to incorporate black beans or corn into a salad or a main entrée. In addition, diabetics should consume five servings of fruits and vegetables each day. While you might want to eat some fruits and vegetables with your regularly-scheduled meals, you can also eat them as snacks. You can "sneak" some vegetables into your soup, or add fruit to your breakfast cereal. A little creativity will go a long way to ensuring that you consume the fruits and vegetables you need. Fruits and vegetables contain soluble fibers which cut the rate of glucose absorption in the intestines. Meanwhile, carrots can be particularly helpful in getting your blood sugar levels under control. Perhaps the most important tip is to go easy on sugar and sweets. In fact, you should have sweets - at the most - twice a week. This may, in fact, be the most difficult part of the diabetic diet. However, by exercising a little willpower and by using fruit to satisfy your sweet tooth, you should be able to limit your intake of sweets. If you page through a diabetic cookbook, you might be surprised by the array of delicious dishes you will find. For instance, there are sugar-free versions of strawberry smoothies, banana bread, and Dutch apple pancakes. You can even have chocolate ice cream and strawberry cream pie! The dishes are so inviting, in fact, that even non-diabetics have come to love the recipes. Copyright © 2005 - 2006 |
